Know the Difference: Pain vs Discomfort in Training
Training is supposed to challenge you — but it’s not supposed to break you.
One of the most important skills you can develop in fitness, BJJ, and kickboxing is knowing the difference between discomfort and pain. Understanding this keeps you progressing safely, consistently, and long-term.
What Discomfort Feels Like
Discomfort is a normal part of training.
It may feel like:
Heavy breathing
Muscle fatigue
Burning muscles
Pressure
Being tired or challenged
Mental frustration
Discomfort means your body is adapting. It’s your comfort zone being stretched.
Discomfort is usually:
Temporary
Even on both sides
Improves with rest
Manageable with breathing and focus
This is where growth happens.
What Pain Feels Like
Pain is different — and it deserves attention.
Pain may feel like:
Sharp or stabbing sensations
Sudden joint pain
Numbness or tingling
Pain that worsens as you move
Pain that changes your movement pattern
Pain is your body’s warning system.
Ignoring pain doesn’t make you tougher — it makes injuries last longer.
Why This Matters on the Mats
In BJJ and kickboxing, pushing through discomfort builds resilience.Pushing through pain builds problems.
Training while injured:
Slows progress
Creates bad habits
Increases risk of bigger injuries
Keeps you off the mats longer
Smart athletes listen to their bodies.
There Is Always a Way to Modify Training
Training doesn’t have to stop — it can be adjusted.
Modifications may include:
Drilling instead of rolling
Lighter rounds
Reduced intensity
Working different positions
Focusing on technique over power
Taking extra rest between rounds
Modifying training keeps you moving forward without making things worse.
Communication Is Part of Good Training
Let your coach know what’s going on.Let your training partner know your limits.
That’s not weakness — that’s maturity.
The best training environments are built on trust, awareness, and respect.
Long-Term Progress Comes From Smart Choices
The goal isn’t to win today’s workout. The goal is to still be training months and years from now.
Consistency beats intensity.Listening beats ignoring.Smart effort beats reckless effort.
Final Thought
At Watson Training Fitness, we believe in training hard — but training smart.
Learn to recognize discomfort.Respect pain.Modify when needed.
Your body is your most important training partner.Take care of it, and it will take care of you.
